In 1992, Rustam represented the Unified Team as they took gold in the Olympic Games at Barcelona.  Representing Ukraine in 1996, Rustam became the European, World and Olympic Champion on Parallel Bars, winning gold at the XXVI Olympiad in Atlanta.

After the Olympics, Rustam began coaching at Bart Conner Gymnastics in Norman, Oklahoma, then relocated to Houston, Texas, where he has gone on to coach such gymnasts as: Taqiy Abdullah, Tyler Yamauchi, Todd Thornton, and Sean Townsend.

He now represents the United States as an accomplished coach. In August of 2005, Rustam became the men's assistant coach at Oklahoma University.

Current Sooner Taqiy Abdullah-Simmons was coached by Sharipov at the Houston Gymnastics Academy before coming to OU. Currently training at OU are the past two NCAA All-around champions, Jonathan Horton (2006) and Simmons (2007). Sharipov's most recent titles and positions include:

• 2005 & 2006 Assistant Coach, NCAA National Championship Team

• 2004 Head Coach to the Gold Medal-winning Junior Pacific Alliance Team

• 2003, International Competition (USA-Germany-Canada), Coach to Top 3 All-Around Gymnasts

• 2002 Head Coach to the Gold Medal-winning Junior Pan American Team
